I am of the opinion that good design is only possible if it is inspired by an excellent concept. Success is largely achieved by the extent to which the designer has stuck to the concept. A concept is not a pastiche (copy of a style).
What do l mean when l talk about concept? The word "concepts" comes from "to conceive", to form in the mind, to imagine or to think. To be your own interior designer you need to solve problems and imagine solutions in relation to your specific project.
When you have analysed the brief, sorted priorities and researched your subject, your reactions and ideas could form the theme that develops into an innovative solution. Concepts, then are the inspirational thought and ideas you have at any stage in the design process. They are crucial to the development of a design.
When you start your project you will probably have some ideas, but how do you go about gaining further inspiration? There are three typical methods: observation, visual thinking and creative discussion.
Examples of visual thinking are the Sydney Opera House which was inspired by the discarded segments of peel on a plate after the architect had eaten an orange and Norman Foster's design for Hong Kong Airport which is based on a fish skeleton, an idea that came to him at a business lunch.
